Lando Norris Hints at Indy 500 Future After Surprise Indianapolis Visit

Lando Norris, days after a DNF in Canada, made a surprise trip to Indianapolis Motor Speedway and openly entertained the idea of one day racing the Indy 500, having already won Monaco.

Lando Norris visited Indianapolis Motor Speedway on the Tuesday after the 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500, just days after a gearbox failure ended his Canadian Grand Prix early. During his tour, the reigning Formula 1 world champion openly discussed his admiration for the event and left the door wide open to competing in it one day.

Why it matters:

Norris already has one leg of motorsport's Triple Crown — a Monaco Grand Prix victory — and McLaren now has competitive entries in all three disciplines (F1 at Monaco, IndyCar at Indianapolis, and a growing Le Mans program). An Indy 500 bid by Norris would not only be a major story for the sport but could also position him as a serious Triple Crown contender, following in the footsteps of Graham Hill and Fernando Alonso.

The details:

  • Norris flew to Indianapolis after his DNF in Montreal, joining former McLaren teammate Daniel Ricciardo and 500 finisher Conor Daly at the track.
  • He toured McLaren’s IndyCar headquarters with team principal Tony Kanaan, cutting a lap of the speedway in a Corvette.
  • Norris congratulated winner Felix Rosenqvist and inspected the iconic Borg Warner Trophy, calling it “nuts” and “as big as Felix.”
  • When asked whether he would ever race the 500, Norris said: “I certainly want to try things outside of Formula 1... whether it is the Indy 500 or just IndyCar in general.”
  • He noted that seeing Fernando Alonso attempt the Triple Crown makes the idea “more inviting” and admitted that even a practice lap would be “pretty gnarly.”
  • Norris lamented missing the race itself due to his own commitments in Canada.

What's next:

Norris will return to F1 action at the Monaco Grand Prix on June 5-7. He currently sits fifth in the drivers' standings with 58 points, while Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli leads the championship on 131 points. For now, the Brit’s comments add fuel to speculation that McLaren could one day field him at Indianapolis — but he remains focused on his F1 career.
