Lando Norris: McLaren's Nurburgring tire test a 'useful learning opportunity'

Lando Norris called McLaren's Pirelli tire test at the Nurburgring a productive and useful learning exercise. Following a start to the 2026 season hampered by technical issues and DNSs, the test provided valuable track time for data collection and driver confidence, even under the strict limitations of a supplier-mandated session.

Lando Norris says McLaren's recent Pirelli tire test at the Nurburgring was a valuable chance to gather data and make up for lost track time after a disrupted start to the 2026 Formula 1 season. The test, which also involved Mercedes, marked the first time current F1 cars have run at the legendary German circuit since 2020.

Why it matters:

For a team like McLaren that experienced a rocky start to the season with DNSs (Did Not Start) in Australia and China, any additional track time is critical. While the test was primarily for Pirelli's tire development, it provided the team with a rare opportunity to run their MCL40 in a controlled environment, gather baseline data, and allow their drivers to build confidence with the car outside of a race weekend pressure cooker.

The details:

  • The two-day test at the Nurburgring was originally scheduled for Jeddah but was relocated after the early-season Middle Eastern races were cancelled.
  • Oscar Piastri drove on the first day but was limited to 66 laps due to a technical issue with the MCL40.
  • Lando Norris took over on day two, completing a more substantial 108 laps and setting a best time of 1:33.640.
  • Teams are heavily restricted in these Pirelli-mandated tests; they cannot test new upgrades and must follow run plans set by the tire supplier.
  • Norris highlighted the dual benefit: assisting Pirelli while also gaining useful insights. "Sessions like this, even if they aren’t for testing our own upgrades, provide learning opportunities which are useful as we look to push forward this season," he stated.
  • Both drivers appreciated the chance to drive the modern F1 car on the historic Nurburgring GP circuit, a track known for its old-school challenges and rewarding feel.

What's next:

McLaren will now regroup at their Woking factory to prepare for the upcoming Miami Grand Prix. The team showed signs of recovery at the last race in Japan, where Piastri scored a podium finish. The extra miles and data from the Nurburgring, though not focused on car development, could contribute to a stronger performance as they aim to climb the constructor standings from their current mixed position.
