Russell proud of Sprint Qualifying comeback after Miami struggles
George Russell claimed Sprint pole at the Canadian Grand Prix, bouncing back from a tough Miami weekend. He credits Mercedes' upgrades and expects gradual improvement in race starts.
George Russell delivered a statement performance in Sprint Qualifying at the Canadian Grand Prix, taking pole position just 0.068 seconds ahead of teammate and title rival Kimi Antonelli. The Briton expressed relief and pride after shaking off the difficulties faced in Miami earlier this season.
Why it matters:
Russell's resurgence signals that Mercedes' major upgrade package is beginning to pay off. After a challenging start to the year where race pace and starts have been weak points, this result reasserts Russell's competitiveness and keeps the team in the fight behind McLaren and Ferrari.
The details:
- Russell edged Antonelli, both McLarens, and Lewis Hamilton at Canada's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, finishing 0.068s clear.
- Speaking after the session, Russell reflected: "This feels great after a tough Miami but I never doubted myself. I know what I can do. Miami is unique but this is an amazing circuit with high grip."
- Mercedes brought a substantial update package for Montreal, including a revised front wing and endplate aimed at improving airflow conditioning, plus changes to the front corner area with reduced upper lip camber and enlarged inlet/exit sizes for better cooling.
- Despite the qualifying success, Russell remains measured about race starts: "We are making baby steps. I am not going to say we are going to fly off the line. History tells us that hasn't happened often this year. McLaren have been making good starts."
What's next:
The main race on Sunday will be the real test. Russell acknowledged that race pace—particularly starts—remains Mercedes' biggest weakness. If the team can execute a clean launch and maintain tyre life, they could challenge for a podium. However, McLaren's strong race form and Ferrari's presence on the third row mean the fight for victory is far from settled.
