Russell Takes Sprint Qualifying Pole in Canada Ahead of Antonelli, Hamilton P5

George Russell led a Mercedes 1-2 in Sprint Qualifying at the Canadian Grand Prix, with Kimi Antonelli second and Lando Norris third. Lewis Hamilton placed fifth for Ferrari.

George Russell delivered a statement performance in Sprint Qualifying at the Canadian Grand Prix, securing pole position ahead of his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli. The British driver set a 1:12.965 to lead the way, with Antonelli just 0.068s behind. McLaren's Lando Norris took third, followed by Oscar Piastri in fourth.

Why it matters:

Mercedes' dominant 1-2 in SQ3 signals a strong resurgence for the team, which has struggled for consistent one-lap pace earlier this season. Russell's pole also sets up an intriguing Sprint race, where he will look to convert that pace into a win against a hungry Antonelli and the ever-dangerous McLaren duo.

The details:

  • Russell's lap: A clean final sector gave him the edge over Antonelli, who had been quicker in FP1 earlier.
  • Ferrari struggles: Lewis Hamilton managed only fifth, while Charles Leclerc was sixth – both losing time in the middle sector.
  • Red Bull midfield: Max Verstappen could only manage seventh, with Isack Hadjar eighth. The RB21 seems off the ultimate pace on this circuit.
  • Surprise packages: Arvid Lindblad put the Racing Bulls into ninth, while Carlos Sainz rounded out the top ten for Williams.
  • Eliminated in SQ2: Nico Hulkenberg (Audi), Gabriel Bortoleto (Audi), Franco Colapinto (Alpine), Esteban Ocon (Haas), and Oliver Bearman (Haas) failed to advance.

What's next:

The Sprint race later today will be critical for grid positions for the main Grand Prix. With Mercedes showing raw speed and McLaren not far behind, the battle at the front promises to be tight. Verstappen will need a strong start to recover from seventh.
