Liam Lawson faces FIA stewards over CDS violation in Canada
Liam Lawson is under investigation after his car's clutch disengagement system failed during a red flag in FP1, potentially jeopardizing his Sprint qualifying weekend.
Liam Lawson is facing an FIA investigation after a red flag incident during FP1 at the Canadian Grand Prix, where his RB's clutch disengagement system (CDS) failed to operate properly, breaching technical regulations.
Why it matters:
The CDS is a critical safety device that allows marshals to safely move a stopped car by disengaging the clutch without engine power. A failure here not only raises serious safety concerns but could also result in a penalty for Lawson and Racing Bulls, compounding a session already shortened by a hydraulics issue.
The details:
- Just 12 minutes into FP1 in Montreal, Lawson suffered a suspected hydraulics failure and ground to a halt at the exit of Turn 2, triggering an early red flag.
- When marshals attempted to recover the car, they pressed the CDS button, but the system did not work as required by Article C9.3 of the F1 technical regulations.
- FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer flagged the issue, noting: "When car 30 stopped on the track during FP1, the marshals pressed the CDS button at 12:41. But it turned out that the CDS was not working as required by the F1 Regulations, Article C9.3. I am referring this matter to the Stewards."
- Article C9.3 mandates that all cars must have a means of disengaging the clutch for at least 15 minutes, even if main hydraulic, pneumatic, or electrical systems have failed. The system must also shut down the ERS and be operable by a marshal in under five seconds via a recessed button.
- Lawson already had limited running due to the early stoppage – he now faces a stewards' hearing ahead of Sprint qualifying.
What's next:
Lawson will visit the stewards before the next session to explain the CDS failure. Possible penalties range from a fine to a grid drop or even a disqualification from the session, though stewards typically consider mitigating factors. Regardless, his lack of practice laps puts him on the back foot for the Sprint weekend.
